Welcome to the Hampton RoadsArea
(Willimsburg, Norfolk, Suffolk, Chesapeake, VA Beach)

The First area you will pass on I-64 is Williamsburg
Home of Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, Colonial Williamsburg,
and of course the Anheiser Busch Brewery (Tours no longer available)

Just past the Hampton/Newport News area, near the Hampton Coliseium, you will take the RIGHT exit to I-664.
This will bypass most of the Norfolk/VA Beach Traffic.

Shortly after entering I-664 you will enter a tunnel. Don't slow down!
That's why the tunnels get backed up sometimes.

As soon as you exit the tunnel you will have quite a scenic view of the area.
Especially nice at night!

After traveling several more miles, KEEP RIGHT for exit 15 B which rejoins
I-64 (after the Norfolk traffic).

A few miles after you get back on I-64, EXIT RIGHT onto exit 291B which will put you on 168 south
and through the Chesapeake, VA area onto the Chesapeake Expressway.
BE CAREFULL - THIS COMES UP FAST AND IS ONLY A SINGLE LANE EXIT!!!

A few miles later you will have to pay toll unless you get off at GREAT BRIDGE and take BUSINESS 168. While this toll is excessive in the summer, unless you are traveling on a weekday evening, I recomend you just pay the toll. It's MUCH faster and eliminates several lights and intersections.
This toll currently in-season is $8 on the weekends and $3 during the week.

Note, from here, OBX is about an hour away and pretty much a streight shot.
No further turns until you reach the beach!

At the VA/NC boarder, There is this cool store called the Border Station. It's a typical convenience store and souvenir shop, but the place sits right on the state line. On one side of the store you can buy Virginia Lottery tickets, and on the other you can buy North Carolina Tickets. There is a colored line of tile in the middle of the floor where the actual line is. Also the State line is represented outside the store by a big post (in right photo above). You can also walk from the parking lot to the "Welcome to North Carolina" Sign on the side of the road. (Nice photo op!)

Don't worry it's not too long before you will reach North Carolina!
4-lane highway again....Yahoo! Infact, RT. 165 turns into RT. 158!
Just on the state line you will pass a very large tower. (right) It is the transmitter of WNOB-FM which is licensed to Chesapeake, and serves the Hampton Roads area as well as the Outer Banks.

There aren't many more sites of noting the rest of the way down. Here's are the few. This is the famous"Grave Digger".

Although not really in the "Outer Banks", on the way down you will pass "The Cotton Gin". This is basically an art and crafts shop meets a souvenir shop. You will see numerous advertisements for the place all over the Outer Banks.

About half way down near the town of Barco, is MORRIS FARM MARKET. Worth a stop if open. You can make a meal hear out of the samples available!

Grandy Farm Market. Best Peaches in the World! There are many farm markets along this stretch, but these Peaches are the best!

Finally, you will cross the long bridge to the Outer Banks.

As you approach the coast, the road opens into 5 lanes. The left most 2 lanes go to Highway 12 and into the towns of Southern Shores, Duck, and Corolla. The next 2 lanes to the right stay on Highway 158 to Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags head. The far right lane goes into the Visitors Center. If you are new to the area, it's a must! Literature and information on everything to do in the area!

Were Here! Check out my Outer Banks Page
